CDEs Needed — Changes to Practice Requirements

In order to increase the number of Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE®), the National Credentialing Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE)* has made a major change in the practice experience requirements starting in 2011. Now 400 of the 1000 diabetes practice hours required to qualify for the exam can be gained through a voluntary mentorship program. The goal is to provide healthcare professionals who need experience in providing diabetes self-management education with needed hours and hands-on clinical experience with a seasoned CDE®. The NCBDE is asking experienced CDE's to apply to become Mentors. For more info: http://www.ncbde.org/mentorship.cfm

In addition to 1000 hours of clinical experience, all new CDE® applicants also need to complete 15 hours of diabetes related CE within in 2 years preceding the exam.
