About the program The QD program offers free, handmade quilts to children 16 years old or younger. This program is completely self-sustaining thanks to the talents and generosity of others who have donated materials, quilt tops, and finished quilts. While our quilt materials and some quilts are donated, shipping them at our expense has been costly. In the past we simply asked folks to please consider making an optional donation to help cover shipping costs. Unfortunately, out of the 60 people who ordered quilts in 2007 only 4 made a donation. User Fee (Shipping and Handling Costs). Our cost to ship quilts last year exceeded $1,000 -- enough to have recertified 5 insulin pumps. Therefore, as of 01/01/2008 we now find it necessary to charge a user fee of $12.00 per quilt. This user fee is intended to help cover the cost of shipping and handling (postage and the large envelopes at $1.79 each) which often exceed $12.00 -- we do not to make any profits from this user fee.
We apologize for having to switch from a program we intended to provide entirely for free but our total financial donations for 2007 (from outside sources) was less than $350. Our Board has personally been paying for all our business and program expenses and as much as we would like to keep paying for the shipping of quilts, we are simply unable to do so. Eligibility This program is available to help brighten the life of any child age 16 or younger, newly diagnosed with diabetes (within the past year). Limit one (1) quilt per child. We reserve the exclusive right to refuse any request that appears to be fraudulent or excessive in nature. How to Request a Quilt Please be aware that our entire quilting program is run by volunteers (the founder and her two young daughters ages 8 and 12 sew most of the quilts). The QD program takes a lot of sewing and time to administer and we are unable to respond to requests for "rush" jobs.
Disclaimer Information Our quilts are ONLY FOR CHILDREN WHO HAVE DIABETES! Please do not strain this program by trying to "buy" cheap quilts for other purposes.
If you would like to donate a quilt (we also take unfinished blocks and quilt tops), sewing supplies, or volunteer your sewing skills: If you are a quilt shop owner and would like information about our program to display in your store (free), please contact the program-director. Your customers can purchase supplies from you and make a quilt for us! Even better -- organize a sew-bee at your shop or use classes to make quilts for children! |

Love to quilt? Sweet little Madison was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes the day before her 1st birthday. Madison was the very first child ever to receive a quilt through our program. Alyssa, age 3, from California was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2. She loves her free quilt from us as well as her IPump teddy bear!
