Insulin Pumps for Underinsured Mellitus Patients (IPUMP)

Cash Assistance Program Closed:  Open Enrollment begins again in June 2008)

We are accepting applications for recertified, used insulin pumps.

Eligibility

To qualify for either financial assistance with your co-pay or for a free, refurbished insulin pump you must have diabetes, legally reside in the United States, and:

  • Submit a doctor's prescription for an insulin pump;
  • If you have insurance have a co-pay of $40 or more per prescription; or
  • Have satisfactorily demonstrated other reasons for financial hardship, and
  • All applicants must show that they will be able to afford pump supplies.

About the program

This program assists qualifying persons of any age with assistance in purchasing their first insulin pump or in obtaining a free, recertified insulin pump.  This program requires participation from your doctor.  We will not work with anyone who does not have a doctor that has prescribed a pump.  Under this program we do not reimburse for expenses already incurred.

Financial Assistance.  To qualify for financial assistance under this program applicants must show two things:  financial hardship AND how they will pay for insulin pump supplies on their own.  Most who qualify for this program will have some insurance coverage.  The maximum amount we contribute towards the co-pay towards an insulin pump is $1,000.00.  We do not use a sliding scale for income to qualify applicants, instead we take into account your overall financial situation and reason for hardship.

If financial assistance is granted, payment is never sent to the patient.  Payment can only be made directly to an insulin pump company on your behalf and we will not aid in the purchase of pumps through eBay or other auction or buyer/seller/exchange services, or from private individuals.  We will only work with pump manufacturers and licensed distributors.

Free Insulin Pumps.  You can also use the IPUMP application to apply for a free insulin pump.  To qualify you will have to show financial hardship AND how you will pay for the pump supplies on your own.  If you are approved to for a free pump you need to know the following:

  • All free pumps that we send have been previously used.  Pumps are donated to us and we then have them recertified (that means we send them to the pump company who made them and have them checked out and repaired if necessary). Sometimes, a pump company will choose to upgrade the pump for free.

  • The recertification fee for a used pump is $200.00.  You will need to pay this fee prior to a pump being sent you.  In most cases your insurance will pay for this fee, if not, you will be required to pay the fee prior to a pump being sent.  You do NOT have to pay this fee to apply for a free pump -- this fee is only due if you are approved and we have a specific pump for you.  Do NOT send money with your application.  In some cases, a pump company will recertify your pump for free or the Board may waive this fee but you will have to demonstrate why if you cannot pay the recertification fee how you will be able to afford the cost of insulin pump supplies.

  • We will not send a pump directly to you.  All pumps must be sent to a doctor, CDE, or your local insulin pump representative.  Under no circumstances can we send a pump directly to a client.  All pump training, maintenance and any future repairs of the pump will be your sole responsibility.

Some pumps donated to us are about four years old, however, many pumps we receive are 1-2 years old and still under warranty.  Insulin pump companies may even choose to upgrade pumps for free.  Any pump you receive will have been sent to the manufacturer just prior to it being placed with you to be checked, service, and recertified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Three Important Ways Clients Can Help Us!

Many of our clients ask how they can ever repay us for helping them. There is no need to repay us for our help ... it's what we are happy and able to do thanks to our generous donors.

But if you want to help tjere are two things you can do for free that really make a difference:

1.  Use Goodsearch.com and Goodshop.com when you use the Internet. There is no cost to you at all and when you select IPump.org as your charity of choice you can raise money for us simply by surfing the net.

GoodSearch: You Search...We Give!

2.  Visit our new blog and simply post a note of thanks or tell others how we helped.  While donors give without expecting anything in return it is always nice for them to be able to read personal notes from people that their contributions helped.

Visit our blog or post a thank you to your donor

3.  Tell your employer about IPump.  Because we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit we can get matching grants for anyone else who donates through your employer.
